IMPORTANT INFORMATION/ALERT FOR PIO CARD HOLDERS
This is to inform all PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card holders that the facility for converting PIO cards into OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards on gratis basis is available up to 31.12.2017 only.
2. It is pertinent to mention that erstwhile PIO cards are hand written whereas the new OCI cards are machine readable. From October 2018, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will accept only machine readable travel documents. The existing PIO cards which are hand written will, therefore, become invalid travel documents from October, 2018. Hence, it will be necessary upon PIO cardholders to obtain machine readable OCI cards in lieu of existing hand written PIO cards before October 2018 to avoid any inconvenience.
3. Those travelling to India on the strength of their PIO cards (handwritten) after ICAO’s rules/ guidelines come into effect from October, 2018, will be refused entry at the Indian immigration counters and sent back. It is also communicated to the existing PIO cardholders that any request for conversion of PIO card to OCI card after the expiry of the current deadline of December 31, 2017, will attract a fee of USD 275/-.
4, In view of the above, all PIO card holders are advised to get their PIO cards converted into OCI Cards on gratis basis before 31.12.2017 positively.
